Here we shall part company, Edward on to Nimeguen, Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam, London, home. I on to the Hartz mountains, Dresden or Berlin – or as I may then decide. Our friend Geo. Horn proposes to join us at Coblentz either on the 20th or 27th. Letters are to be forwarded on the 15th for London 16th to Coblentz

The morning was a little foggy, but it was an inducement to me to finish my nights rest. At 5 o’clock I took Quentin Durward in hand, & two thirds of his interesting story of Louis XI crooked policy & Charles the Bold of Burgundy his mad bull headed action. Our friend Hayes accompanied us to London & must have thought us dull companions for we cared not for the names of the places we passed thro’ nor for the gazing of the passers-by on our Swiss travelling capes, nor for many other matters to which he wished to direct our attention.

On arriving in London, we found much to our disappointment that the Ostend packet had ceased sailing on Wednesday – & thus to record a bad joke, we were all abroad in our endeavours to get there. But the Boulogne packet left at the time we wished, and as we preferred amusing ourselves on the other side of the channel to [there seem to be some words missing here] cared not to stay longer in London than necessary.
