TUES July 18. Our sitting room was a pleasant one with French windows opening to the lawn & maid servants for waiters. So far the inn was good, but although the chambermaid assured me that the sheets were always made "red hot" before being put on the bed, I was convinced they were damp last night & ?disputed with them. What a convenient little addition to one’s travelling appointments is a damp detector.
After searching about the village for some time for a donkey for my wife to pursue our journey on and a donkey & cart for the luggage, I succeeded, & we jogged merrily along up the hill visiting the little church of Shanklin the porch of which was covered with names of visitors on my former visit. I then mentioned something about committing such records to the immortality of a whitewashing posterity; the churchwardens seem to have thought that a new coat of whitewash would serve only as an album for a fresh host of contributions, & have therefore wisely had it painted dark brown. A nice long ascent is Luccombe Hill & a good view is got from its summit. Elizth alighted at East End – while the donkeys went on to Bonchurch & we strolled down under the cliff by a rough & diversified path over styles & stones & rocks. Here commences the Undercliff which is a high range of stone cliff of 5 & 600 feet
