was lame & told us that he was prevented by his accident from doing any other work. The other, whose name was Alfred Day was a nice looking little fellow of eleven years old whose collection of donkey exciting phrases was remarkably amusing. 'Now then old sewer-sweat' – 'Get along with you handsome is' & many others were among them; we should have sent the other boy home at St Lawrence but that Alfred had never been but once before at Sandrock (9 miles from his home) & was afraid to go back by himself. Our donkeys accomplished the journey remarkably well & had trotted & cantered occasionally in good style. On arriving at Sandrock hotel we had a charming sitting room with windows to the ground opening under a beautiful verandah. Everything looked comfortable & retired & rustic, of which more tomorrow.

WED. JULY 19. This coast is famous for crabs; a beautiful specimen we had this morning for breakfast. And afterwards we had our work table placed under the verandah which is covered with ivy & its pillars also variegated with flowers & shrubs. Nicely paved is it with hexagonal stones & black sea pebbles and in front of it is a lawn of considerable extent sloping irregularly down to a gay flower border filled with beautiful plants; such variety of sorts I never before saw. The domain is bounded by trees, between them a wide extent of sea is visible. At the
