with Hans Hemling paintings, is a study for an hour. We visited the Jerusalem chapel - wherein is contained a presentation of the sepulchre at Jerusalem, a sad instance of the ridiculous is enclosed therein. Martha incensed the old woman much by clambering up some stairs leading to the mysteries above & by being inquisitive concerning the Virgin Mary’s petticoats.
At night again to the Fête – after the concert illumination – Gardens are extensive prettily laid out & flanked with water. A large bird was placed on a high pole filled with fireworks & a hole left underneath. This was to be fired at by rockets and the fortunate marksman gained the prize of a silver coffee pot given by King Leopold. I entered my name as a candidate; there were 48 of us & we fired in turn; five rounds were expounded before the hole was penetrated; the bird itself was struck several times. On the explosion taking place a splendid display of fireworks issued from it for 8 or 10 minutes. Many more fireworks were let off before our departure at 11. I met a Mr Blyth & Stainforth there who were very agreeable & invited us to their houses very cordially.

Some beautiful Valenciennes lace the manufacture of this place, we bought here today.
TUESDAY JULY 25. On board the barge were many of our companions from England in the Leyburns, Mrs Hare, the Gilberts etc. At ½ past 9 we started; the same barge that Napoleon
