C AUG. 1

We sat in the marble chair in which the body of Ch. was found 300 years after his internment; it has been used at the coronation of 36 emperors of Germany. The choir is a perfect lanthorne of tall windows of stained glass. In it is a pulpit of gold silver ivory precious & other stones. The sacristan had too much pride to demean himself to the opening of the door at our leaving, & although within a few yards of it, he called pompously to his attendant to perform it.

The fountain spring of the celebrated water was of course visited by us, & a glass handed round of its compound of rotten eggs & gun-powder. If I had to take this nauseous liquid daily, I fear I should consider the remedy worse than the disease. – The Redoute or bath & gambling rooms are all large & handsome, & so are the exteriors of some of the houses in its ?neish boulevard
