but the general aspect of the town is much less respectable than I expected, being old and irregular without being picturesque.

WED. AUG. 2 The country from Aix to Cöln was very quiet & level; so was not the pavé for a more jolting noisy & uneven road I never travelled over. Our companions in the diligence were a Mr Davenport & his valet & from them we learnt the state of the elections in England & were accommodated with the sight of 2 English radical newspapers. A little sparring too in politics we had with Mr D. which passed away the time pleasantly enough in spite of his radical politics.

Arriving at Coln in the afternoon we were enabled to lionise for an hour or two. The cathedral was naturally the first place to which
