all we have met with in the 100 miles we have voyaged on it. On the Thames last year we must have passed as many hundred in the same distance.

On my enquiring the reason of this of my friends at Frankfurt, I find that in consequence of there being 3 distinct companies & only then between that place & Rotterdam its outlet, the delay, uncertainty & expense of sending goods is so considerable as to make it necessary to send all for Northern & British & American trade to Hamburg. This costs but about 3/- per cwt for 310 miles all land carriage.

SAT. AUG. 5 This being the first of our destined resting places we delighted in spending an idle day as some change to the industry we have hitherto displayed. I occupied myself with Sir Wm Curtis’s 3 R’s reading, writing & arithmetic, which I had found little leisure for recently. Mrs Joy received a letter from home which was very acceptable, for we had now been absent a fortnight. An excellent table d’hote had we but no English people thereat except ourselves & 2 Irish ladies who sat next to Martha & whose acquaintance she made. They politely
